Hobart's Remarkable History Book
Never in the history of Hobart—maybe not of any other town in Oklahoma—has an account like this one been published.
Since August 6, 1901, when a community of 5,000 burst from what had been open prairie the day before, Hobart life has been a chain of days woven into an unrelenting story of faith, hard work, and optimism.
This One Day in Hobart is not a complete history. Instead, it includes a tidbit for every day of the year—sometimes more than one.
It’s all meticulously recorded here, from the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 to the massive flood of 2007. You will learn about the opening of the World War II prisoner of war camp, the baseball stadium, and Hunter Park.
It is a story of businesses—the Dixie Store, Wagon Wheel, Bon Ton Café, Boothe Drug, and many, many more.
Remember rain day? How about the tragic crash of the Air Force jet west of town? Fires, tornadoes, blizzards—all are recounted in this unique book. You will learn how Armistice Day, V-E Day, and the Kennedy assassination affected our town.
There are animals—monkeys in Hunter Park, alligators on the courthouse square, antelope near Lone Wolf, and rabid dogs on the streets.
And you can tell it’s a story of Oklahoma because there’s plenty of football.
This One Day in Hobart will serve as a resource for years to come.
